This handmade pouf from India is a unique piece of world art that will enhance your living space.
Story Behind the Art:
These hand-crafted poufs are made from flat-weave kilims, which are known as 'pile-less' rugs; the design is also known as 'slit-weave'. These intricate designs are achieved by interweaving the various colors of the vertical and horizontal strands of the rug. This pouf footstool was handmade by local villagers in the Judhpur area, located in the Rajasthan province of India. First, they weave the kilim into the desired pattern, making it to the exact dimensions and then upholster onto the handmade frame. The majority of the weavers are women, who live in the villages of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. As we grow, we are able to create more jobs for female weavers who otherwise would not have the opportunity to do so. The community also thrives from rug weaving and furniture production as the local farmers benefit from wool sales, and the local artisans create natural and vegetable dyes for the artisans to use in their designs.
